A variety of databases
were searched for the
compilation of this bibliography
on adolescent alcoholism, reflecting
the psychological and socioeconomic
aspects covered. Nine hundred and
twenty-eight citations in English
and foreign languages for the
period January 1986 through April
1992 were included. For journal
articles written in a foreign
language, the English tranglation of
title is placed in brackets; for
monographs, the C.cle is given
in the original language. In
both cases the language of publiLation
is shown by a three letter
abbreviation appearing at the end of
the
citation. Arrangement is by eight
subject headings; a citation
appears in only one. The citations
are formatted according to the
rules established for Index Medicus.
The eight subject headings
include: (1) prevention and
control;
(2) genetics; (3) psychology;
(4) social factors; (5)
health services; (6) rehabilitation*

ADOLESCENT ALCOHOLISM
Alcoholism, a primary health problem in the nation, is recognized by the American Medical
Association as a disease which can be arrested but not cured. Of particular
concern at present is the
widespread, increased consumption of alcohol by children and adolescents.
In addition to the risk
of developmental delays due to interference with normal maturation, early
use or abuse of alcohol
may result in long-term adverse social, emotional, and economic effects.
The drug of choice of most substance-abusing adolescents is alcohol. Before the end of the adolescent
years, it is hypothesized that a majority of young people will have experiences with alcohol and/or
other drugs. An estimated one half of youths have used alcohol by the
age of thirteen; approximately
one third drink on a monthly basis by the end of high school.
Statistics indicate that alcohol was
involved in half of the teenage traffic fatalities in 1990. Other social problems,
e.g., teenage suicide,
adolescent pregnancy, delinquency, and poor school performance,
may be closely related to alcohol
use.
The minimum drinking age has been rai.
: to twenty-one in most states as one method of
counteracting this marked increase in alcohol use among adolescents.
